DIA staff is responsible for inspecting and licensing or certifying health care providers and suppliers, restaurants and grocery stores, social and charitable gambling operations, and hotels and motels. In cases of a planned closure, the 60-day advance notice goes to the Iowa Department of Inspections and Appeals, which inspects and regulates Iowa's care facilities, as well as the office of the Iowa Long-Term Care Ombudsman, which advocates for older Iowans. Residential care facilities are defined in Iowa Code Chapter 135C. Under Iowa Code Chapter 235E, the Department of Inspections and Appeals is now responsible for accepting reports of suspected dependent adult abuse in the following facilities and for completing evaluations of these reports: Health care facilities licensed in Iowa Code section 135C.1, Hospitals defined in Iowa Code section 135B.1, DIA regulates food businesses like restaurants, bars (including those that only serve beverages), cafeterias, catering operations, mobile food trucks, farmers markets, temporary events, vending machines, grocery and convenience stores, home food processing establishments, and food processing plants and warehouses. An elder group home (EGH) is a single-family residence operated by a person who provides room, board, and personal care to three to five older adults who are not related to the person operating the residence.
